my PhD student was BITTEN
Feb. 23rd, 2004 04:43 pm(from intermnal e-mail in Uni of Newcastle)
...Over a period of several weeks small portable items of equipment and personal belongings went missing eg scanners/printers/CD rewriters etc from several adjacent depts, and there were no obvious break-in entry points. It was believed the culprit may have gained entry to an open window on upper floors via scaffolding in the inner quadrangle of the William Leach building.
My PhD student Mike Wilson came to the lab ( 2nd Foor WL bldng) on a Saturday morning and saw a suspicious guy leaving our lab and going into our office across the corridor. He managed to phone the university police, but before they had a chance to arrive the culprit decided to leave with his stash. Mikes dad is a policeman and he decided to ask what he was doing. A struggle followed during which Mike wrestled with the guy and tried to sit on him until the university security arrived. He was bitten several times. Fortunately a postdoc ( called Ash! - formidable sight - over 6 foot tall with a shaven head!) from an adjacent lab happened to turn into the corridor and helped contain the culprit until the university security and police arrived.
Mike went to A and E to be seen to and was prescribed strong doses of antibiotics. Human bites from a microbiological viewpoint are a lot more severe than dog bites!...
