autism is a life-long condition. It's silly to think or hope that one may grow out of it -- the neurological wiring is hard-set, and I do actually believe it's present pre-natally. The so-called 'high-functioning' people (inverted-commaed because any one single individual travels all over the continuum within the space of one day in response to the internal or environmental factors) only appear more able because they're alert and because of the high intellectual capacity they're capable of designing coping strategies, which far from suggests that their struggles, the need for medications/medical attention and possible intervention therapies doesn't exist past primary school. Luckily, in the UK it's not too difficult to get disability allowances so long as one is in full-time education (I don't know whether state help exists for working folk.)
