there is something perversive about academics
My German flatmate who is starting a PhD just introduced us to her boyfriend - a very interesting American who works for our University. he immediately impressed me saying that he's been to Belarus on his way from Bejging. He's taught English to teachers in China, and Egypt and he's finishing a (part-time) PhD in Ethics of Medical Genetics. He and she were touching each other's hands after the dinner, then they were gently bickering about going to his place or staying in our flat for the night.
A week lated she told me that he'd applied to a permanent position in Netherlands.
What's the value of academics as partners? No money and one eye always on a position somewhere far from there. :-(
