"Various Russian media are now spreading new comments by Johan Bäckman. According to him, I would have been criminally charged in Finland for blasphemy or something similar, related to a performance during my World Political City Walk.

This is hilarious and false. A couple of comments are in order.

The misinformation fabricated and distributed in this case is a
clear attempt to throw dirt on persons, in this case me, that ask critical questions about freedom of expression and human rights in Russia. The strategy is, of course, not specific to Russia, and it has happened to many people in different parts of the world.

I have not been informed of criminal charges related to my walk. Claims that the performance of my World Political City Walk would violate any law are absurd.

If anyone wants to report something about my walk to the police, they are obviously free to do so. That act will be legally insignificant. These falsehoods will never lead to a real criminal charge in Finland. The authors of the lies surely know this, and it is all about media strategy.

For the sake of clarity, however, let us quote the Interfax news item:

“ "The Finnish Criminal Code bans even an attempt to obstruct a religious service (Article 17-11) and any kind of humiliation of another person's faith in writing or in other forms (17-10). Wearing a mask at a public place and unsanctioned rallies are also prohibited. It is necessary to notify police beforehand in Finland," Backman said.” (end of quote)

The claim that a religious service would have been obstructed by standing nearby a church two hours after the church was closed is clearly incorrect.

No humiliation of anyone’s faith took place.

According to the penal code of Finland, wearing a mask in a public event is prohibited only if there exists a clear intention to employ violence against a person or cause damage to property. No such intention ever existed or has even been claimed to exist.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma, routinely informed the police beforehand that my walk would take place. I believe they did this because they thought there would be a significant number of people participating in the walk. This proved to be correct.

As there are clearly no legal grounds whatsoever for these claims, they obviously play some other purpose. One possible logic is that if you spread lies of this kind and try to make people even for a moment believe that “Pussy Riot style action” could lead to a judicial process also in countries like Finland, it may help to “normalize” the trial in Russia. Other motives are also possible.

It is flattering that my modest World Political City Walk has received all this attention. I thank all the participants in this continuing journey of walking by asking questions. Whatever your intentions, you have made the walk even more successful than I could ever have imagined. Love and peace, let us walk again. Please do not share lies."
